Ahern publishes European Arrest Warrant Annual Report 2009

The Minister for Justice and Law Reform, Mr Dermot Ahern T.D. has today published the Annual Report for 2009 on the operation of the European Arrest Warrant Act 2003. The European Arrest Warrant provides for a speedy extradition process within the European Union.

Minister Ahern said: "69 persons were surrendered to other Member States of the European Union in 2009. Of those surrendered, 21 were sent to the UK, 20 to Poland and 13 to Lithuania. Ireland received 326 European Arrest Warrants in 2009 and offences cited included murder, rape, drugs trafficking and assault/robbery.

The European Arrest Warrant continues to be a vital part of the fight against crime in the EU. From 1 January 2004 (when the Act came into operation) to 31 December 2008, 263 persons in total were surrendered by Ireland. In the same period, 122 persons were surrendered by other Member States to Ireland."
