Recruitment by the Department is generally through open competition conducted by the Public Appointments Service, which is the centralised provider of recruitment and selection services for the Civil Service and is the main access route for candidates interested in joining the public service. These competitions are advertised in the national daily newspapers from time to time. Further details can be obtained by contacting the Public Appointments Service directly at Chapter House, 26-30 Upper Abbey Street, Dublin 1; telephone + 353 1 858-7400. You can also visit their website at www.publicjobs.ie, where you can register your interest for future competitions.
The Department also has the option to recruit directly under a Recruitment Licence from the Commission for Public Service Appointments (CPSA). This licence allows the Department to recruit directly for specialist posts, with or without the assistance of a listed recruitment agency authorised by the CPSA. The Department is obliged to comply with the principles as outlined in the CPSA's codes of practice. The process must be open, accountable and transparent and in line with best practice. The Department is subject to mandatory audits by the CPSA to ensure that the correct recruitment, selection procedures and practises are followed. Competitions run under the Department's licence will be advertised in the national daily newspapers and on the Public Appointments Service website www.publicjobs.ie.
Some of the Department’s agencies and related bodies are responsible for their own recruitment. These include the Courts Service, Legal Aid Board, Property Registration Authority, Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission and the Garda Síochána. In common with the main Department, these bodies will normally advertise competitions on the Public Appointments Service website. Further information may also be available on these bodies' own websites.
