The Garda/Policing area of the Department is the link between the Garda Commissioner on the one hand and the Minister, Government and legislature on the other.

Responsibilities include (but are not confined to) the following areas:

  • human resources and industrial relations: administration of policy on recruitment, senior promotions, retirement and discipline
  • standards and accountability: monitoring of ethics and conduct, tribunals and enquiries, civil proceedings and compensation
  • resources and infrastructure: development and maintenance of Garda buildings and all other equipment, for example, radio, vehicles and so on
  • police co-operation
  • reform and modernisation: review of structures and arrangements for dealing with administration and management of An Garda Síochána
