Other Garda Equipment
The Garda Division works closely with An Garda Síochána who provide a range of equipment and services so that members of the force are adequately equipped to meet the day-to-day frontline demands of a modern police force.
Garda Fleet
The allocation of Garda resources, including vehicles, is constantly assessed by the Garda authorities in the context of Garda operational requirements to ensure delivery of the best possible service to the public. Factors such as population, crime figures and staff numbers are taken into consideration in the process of assessing vehicle allocation.
The current fleet includes Garda cars, motorcycles and other specialised vehicles, including command-and-control vehicles equipped with modern telecommunications and IT equipment.
Garda Air Support
The Garda Air Support Unit became operational in 1997 and is deployed in support of Garda operations on a wide range of policing activities as operational circumstances require. The fleet currently comprises:
• an EC 135TS2 helicopter (operational January 2008)
• an EC 135T2 helicopter (operational since 2002)
• a BN Defender 4000S fixed-wing aircraft (operational since 1997)
Other Equipment & Services
In addition, An Garda Síochána are provided with a wide range of additional equipment including incapacitant spray, anti-stab and anit-ballistic vests, traffic enforcement equipment, rigid-inflatable and hard-hull craft for the Garda Water Unit, retractable batons, mountain bicycles, etc.
