Appointment of two Assistant Commissioners in An Garda Síochána
The Tánaiste and Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Michael McDowell, today announced that the Government has appointed two Assistant Commissioners in An Garda Síochána.
The new Assistant Commissioners are Derek Byrne and Louis Harkin. These appointments fill the vacancies that arose following the retirement of Assistant Commissioner Pat Crummey and the appointment of Assistant Commissioner Martin Callinan to the rank of Deputy Commissioner.

Biog of Assistant Commissioner Byrne
Born in June 1959, a native of Dublin, Derek Byrne has served with An Garda Siochana since 1979. He has served in various postings in Dublin and the North West of Ireland. His most recent postings prior to becoming an Assistant Commissioner were at the Garda National Drugs Unit, the Garda National Immigration Bureau and Pearse St Garda Station.
Biog of Assistant Commissioner Harkin
Born in April 1951, a native of Co. Laois, Louis Harkin has served with An Garda Siochana since 1972. He has served in various postings in Dublin, the South West and North West of Ireland, the Garda Community Relations Section and the Garda College in Templemore. His most recent postings prior to becoming an Assistant Commissioner were at the Garda Strategy Planning and Change Management Units in Garda HQ.
