Remembrance Commission
The Remembrance Commission and the Scheme of Acknowledgement, Remembrance, and Assistance for Victims in this Jurisdiction of the Conflict in Northern Ireland
Those eligible are persons who were injured and the families of those fatally injured, where the injury or death occurred in the State or where the victim was normally resident in the State at the time of the injury or death. These persons were able to apply for funding under the Scheme of Acknowledgement, Remembrance and Assistance for Victims in this Jurisdiction of the Conflict in Northern Ireland.
The Government extended the commission’s term of office, which was due to end in October 2006, until 31 October, 2008.
The Government approved a fund of up to €9 million. A total of €7.4 million was spent by the Commission.
The scheme provided for an acknowledgement payment of €15,000 to the family where a person was fatally injured. In addition the scheme, subject to certain conditions, provided assistance:
1. for medical treatment for injuries sustained
2. where the surviving spouse and dependent children of a person fatally injured have suffered economic hardship
3. to persons who because of their injuries were rendered permanently incapable of working
The scheme also provided assistance, subject to certain conditions, to people who suffered displacement from Northern Ireland to the State or from the State as a result of the conflict and who now wish to return to their original jurisdiction.
The commission provided funding to victim support groups to enable them to provide, among other supports, counselling to victims and their families. Funding was also made available towards the provision of memorials.
You can find details of the scheme on our Remembrance Commission Scheme page.
