Minister Shatter publishes draft Criminal Code prepared by the Criminal Law Codification Advisory Committee

The Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Mr Alan Shatter T.D., today published the draft Criminal Code prepared by the Criminal Law Codification Advisory Committee.

The Minister said:  "I am publishing the draft Criminal Code prepared by the Criminal Law Codification Advisory Committee to enable interested parties to submit their views on it.  Any submissions received will be considered by my Department in the context of its ongoing examination of the draft code."

The Criminal Law Codification Advisory Committee is the statutory body responsible for overseeing the development of a programme for the codification of the criminal law. The Advisory Committee was established in February 2007.

The draft is a partial criminal code covering the following areas of law:

• General Principles
• Non-fatal offences against the person
• Theft and fraud offences
• Criminal damage offences
• Public order offences.

The draft is being published to allow interested parties to submit views as to the advantages or disadvantages of implementing a code of this type.

The draft code is being published on the website of the Department of Justice and Equality (www.justice.ie).  Interested parties may make submissions by post or by email (criminalcode@justice.ie).
