European and International Police Co-Operation
Garda HR Division, in conjunction with the Department of Finance and the Department of Foreign Affairs, is involved in the development of policy relating to terms and conditions of members serving as liaison officers with Interpol, Europol and certain embassies. We are also involved in Garda participation in EU and UN missions in various locations worldwide.
Garda HR represents the Department on the EU Police Co-operation Working Group. This working party, which meets in Brussels, has the objective of enhancing police co-operation in such areas as information exchange and practical police operations among EU Member States.
Further information is available on the Police co-operation page of the European Commission web site.
Northern Ireland Police Co-Operation
The Garda Síochána Act 2005-2007 provides for secondments and exchanges between An Garda Síochána and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
Numerous Gardaí have partaken in exchanges with the PSNI under the auspices of the Intergovernmental agreement and the protocols signed between the Commissioner of An Garda Síochána and the Chief Constable of the PSNI.
Following an intensive negotiation process with the Garda Associations, secondments are now provided for between An Garda Síochána and Police Service of Northern Ireland.
